Sputnik 3 made it into orbit during the International Geophysical Year (IGY), an international project that was conducted between July 1, 1957 and December 31, 1958. Sputnik 3 was a research satellite and a space lab. It was launched into orbit from the Baikonur Cosmodrome (Tyuratum) launch site in the USSR by a modified R7/SS-6 ICBM.
